SLOVENIA, Europe - Some of the most memorable moments in my life have taken place thanks to spending time adventuring across the seas, rivers and lakes. Seeing a moonbow, a rainbow produced by light reflected off the surface of the moon, in the middle of the Atlantic, sleeping on beautiful remote beaches in Albania which are accessible only from the sea and the puzzled sights of Koreans seeing kayaks for the first time in their life, when Simon Osborne and I landed in their villages on our around South Korea trip. All these splendid moments made my life much fuller and I’m a happier person than I would have been without them. Water gives me serenity. Each trip that I make, be it paddle boarding down a river in Slovenia or kayaking the Adriatic Sea, I come back to real life calmer and happier.
I want to share the beautiful moments I experienced on the water with others. Between rowing across the Atlantic Ocean and the East Mediterranean, kayaking around South Korea and many other nice places, I also started making paddling keyrings. Small quirky replicas of SUPs, sea kayaks, whitewater kayaks and open canoes. Luckily they sell well and I’ve come to the point when I can give a small share of my income to support other people to go out and have an adventure on the water. 10% of revenue from the keyrings sales was put in an adventure grant and together with a few other sponsors chipping in, a total of 4500€ worth of money and equipment was put at the disposal to help, fund and encourage people to embark on an adventure.
Hobkey Adventure Grant was set up to support paddlers to go out and do something they’ve always wanted. Not just hard core expeditioners, but any kind of memorable trips. It’s open for beginners and for more seasoned kayakers, canoeists and paddle boarders. The total fund is 4500€ of which, 3000€ in cash and the rest in sponsored kit and service. The prize is divided equally in four categories, SUP, sea kayak, whitewater kayak and open canoe. Each category has a professional committee that will look at all the received applications and choose 5 finalists in each category, which will then go to a public vote. Some very interesting proposals already came in, from paddle boarding in Bhutan, to a father-son trip in Oregon and a multi-day exploration of the Stockholm archipelago. All very interesting and worth supporting. Applications are open until May 31st 2016.
