Shark Bites Swimmer At Manhattan Beach

MANHATTAN BEACH, California - A long-distance swimmer was bitten by a seven foot juvenile Great White at Manhattan Beach yesterday. The victim, Steve Robbles, is in a stable condition after sustaining a bite to the torso. The shark had been hooked by a fisherman and was struggling to free itself when the group of swimmers moved into its path.

There has been a lot of talk about sharks in the Manhattan Beach area over the last few months. The sharks have shown no aggression towards surfers and paddlers and this attack looks to be a case of unfortunate circumstances. According Eric Martin, a marine biologist who spoke to CNN for their report, the incident was most likely a 'reactionary bite' caused by the shark trying to free itself from the hook; Robles just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
