BILBAO, Spain - Bilbao becomes the world headquarters for paddle boarding for one more year with a new edition of the Iberdrola Bilbao World SUP Challenge. On June 3-5, 2016 for the fourth consecutive year, this competition stains the estuary with the colorful boards of the best national and international riders.
Stand Up Paddle has gained a foothold adding followers year after year to become one of today’s fashion sports; and more than a hundred participants from different nationalities who have already attended to previous editions, have devoted to this competition as one of the most important and decisive worldwide. Again this year the championship will be one of the most important competitions of "The EuroTour 2016" circuit - with Category 6 Stars- and therefore the best riders in the world will come to Bilbao to fight for the top of the podium.
A new highlight for this new edition is that it is part of the “Copa Vasca” ("Basque Cup") and together with competition of San Sebastián to be held the weekend of 10, 11 and 12 June. Thus, from these two events the winner will be proclaimed champion of the Basque Country. Also, all the elite category riders who are federated in the Euskal Herriko Surf Federazioa and enroll in Iberdrola Bilbao World Sup Challenge will have a considerable discount paying 50 euros instead of 80 corresponding to that category.
This new edition brings some new features, including the format. On Saturday, the Long Distance Race will take place, with scoring for the European Championship and with a prize purse that reaches €10,000. Sunday morning will see the Sprint Race, where the fastest participants will be rewarded with attractive gifts. The large number of categories of this competition gives the opportunity to sign up for any follower of this sport regardless of age, gender or experience. Thus, participants can register in the categories Elite, Open Race, Amateur or Junior. The little ones will also have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills on their boards with the already successful " Txiki Race", where all participants will take home a prize. And for those who have not yet tried this sport, the event will offer free SUP Clinics where professionals teach Stand Up Paddle tricks and tips. Throughout the weekend, the party and the good atmosphere are insured both in and out of the water because SUP also invades the Uribitarte dock with dozens of activities, but this time dry. Children's workshops, sports exhibitions, board sales, racing skateboards, live music ... all the necessary ingredients for a scenario that will attract both adults and children.
The IBWSC championship is back another year thanks to BWATERS, a local club that promotes SUP in Bilbao, and it is possible this fourth edition thanks again to the support of the City of Bilbao and the unconditional commitment of Iberdrola, together with the Provincial Council of Bizkaia.
