World Record Set For Largest SUP Yoga Class

HILTON HEAD, South Carolina – Last Saturday (March 22), Outside Hilton Head hosted ‘YogiboardHHI,’ a world record setting attempt for the largest in-water yoga class on stand-up paddleboards. The event drew 103 enthusiasts of all experience levels who participated in the class led by local fitness professional Amber Shadwick. The participants successfully set the record, which was recorded and verified by Record Setter. Funds totaling $1,400 were collected for admission and equipment rental for the event, all of which was donated to The Outside Foundation.

The day of festivities kicked off with an introductory clinic at ten am for participants new to stand-up paddleboarding. Soon after people began to gather at the Outside Outpost in Shelter Cove Marina. The crowd of spectators and participants reached well over 100 by two o’clock, when the record setting event began. Participants were launched as a light drizzle began. The rain subsided shortly after, as participants paddled out of the marina to an area nicknamed “The Buddah Bowl,” a favorite SUP yoga locale. The class started soon after, with Miss Shadwick leading participants through a series of yoga poses. Afterwards, paddlers returned to the marina and headed to an after party at Scotts Fish Market. Scott’s provided free beer to participants and a raffle drawing for prizes donated by Kialoah Paddles, Accent Paddles, Werner Paddles, DockLocks, I Love Yoga, Jiva Yoga Center, and Camelbak was held. “This was an awesome display of community, connectivity and love for outdoor fitness” said Miss Shadwick.

Forty members of the Outside Hilton Head staff volunteered for the event; organizing equipment for participants, conducting registration, getting people on and off the water, and participating in the class. “This event was a great display of the teamwork that defines the core of our company. This event would not have been possible without the hard work of Outside staff volunteers,” said Mike Overton, CEO of Outside Hilton Head.

Outside Hilton Head and The Westin Hilton Head Resort and Spa sponsored the event in tandem. Attendees were asked to donate for admission, equipment rental and instruction. All of the funds collected, equaling over $1,400, were donated to the Outside Foundation. Founded in 2013, The Outside Foundation is a local non-profit charged with getting kids outside and protecting and preserving the local environment.

Outside Hilton Head was founded in 1979. The company operates specialty retail stores, nature based adventures, destination management and team and leadership development. The organization’s core values include protection and preservation of local nature, history and culture.
