NEW YORK, New York - Each year SELF Magazine asks their subscribers and contributors to, "nominate women who saw a need, hatched a plan, then changed the world for the better." As a result one leading lady who is highly involved in the Stand Up Paddle scene was not only nominated but just yesterday became a 2012 "Doing Good Honoree" and was featured with a few other women on MSNBC's the TODAY Show!··Of course we are referring to the inspiring Tonia Farman! ·

Tonia is the founder and director of "Athletes for Cancer" where she and others use Stand up Paddle, Surfing, Outrigger Canoeing and Kiteboarding to help cancer victims "rebuild their lives after cancer" through outdoor activities.  Unfortunately Tonia lost her brother to Leukemia when he was only 19 years old and in an effort to "turn grief into something positive" Tonia and Dr. Zallen, a Pediatric Surgeon at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon began getting the organization on its feet.  It is a non-profit organization and they fund most of their events through tax-deductible contributions.

Today "Athletes for Cancer" helps numerous cancer survivors get a new start to life with camps in Oregon and Hawaii.    Tonia has definitely taken a need, hatched a plan, and made the world better which is why it is so fantastic that she was given the honoree award and that she had a unique opportunity to share her vision with more of the world on national TV. Hopefully her message reached someone who could really use the camp in their life.

Congratulations Tonia and thanks for spreading even more stoke to cancer survivors and to the Stand Up Paddle community.

Did you know about "Athletes for Cancer" prior to all the recent press?
