MAUI, Hawaii – There will be a public hearing on the Hawaiian Island of Maui considering specific restrictions on stand up paddle surfers on the island. This marks yet another move on the part of Hawaiian surfers toward limiting the free range of stand up paddle surfers, coming just days in the heels of a similar hearing on the Big Island. See the hearing details below.

Public Hearing Notice:

Pursuant to Chapter 91, Hawaii Revised Statutes, notice is hereby given that the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), State of Hawaii, will hold public hearings on proposed amendments and additions to TITLE 13, SUBTITLE 11, OCEAN RECREATION AND COASTAL AREAS, PARTS I and III, HAWAII ADMINISTRATIVE RULES.Maui – 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23 in the Maui Waena Intermediate School Cafeteria, 795 Onehe‘e Avenue, Kahului.

“The Maui parks and recreations department is going to sit down a set new regulations on water use by all craft,” say those familiar with the situation. Reasonable, local stand up paddle surfers are being encouraged to attend to express their views and work with the local authorities to reach a sensible solution to the rising conflicts between stand up paddle surfer and traditional surfers.
