Anthony Vela - Stand Up Paddler Extraordinaire - 2013

 

SAN DIEGO, California - Join SupConnect LIVE today at 1:00pm PST for the first show of the year!  SupConnect LIVE host Candice Appleby, the newly crowned Elite SUP Woman of the Year, as well as owner and founder Andre Niemeyer will both welcome special guest Anthony Vela.

 

Vela has always enjoyed the ocean from a very young age and became a lifeguard in 1994.  According to his Performance Paddling website which is dedicated to training young paddlers,  "In 1998 he competed in the World Lifesaving Championships as part of the US National Lifesaving team, then went on to represent the US in many surf racing events around the world including: Japan, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and Florida."  In 2000 he began competing in the longer distance traditional paddling races, and through the years has won many (prone) paddleboard races.

 

When Stand Up Paddling first caught his attention, he spent an entire week out with blue whales off the coast of Redondo Beach, California.  It was because of looking at those amazing creatures from the stand up position that Vela said,  "I realized the unique vantage point that standing on a board presented when paddling. Like many, I was instantly hooked."

 

Currently Vela is a well known contributor and competitor in SUP.  He is always at the top of the race charts and adds tremendous credibility and value where ever he participates.  His outgoing, charismatic personality is contagious and the time, knowledge and skill he shares with everyone (especially with the youth in our sport) show even further how committed and passionate he is to the entire SUP industry.
