HOUSTON, Texas – Do you want to push your stand up paddle training to the next level? Are 10-mile upwinders not burning your arms off anymore? Try strapping a parachute to your back. In this week’s video uploaded by Panga Surf, a stand up paddler is seen fighting against the drag created by a small parachute attached to his upper body.

Runners have been using parachute systems for years. This addition to their workouts adds an increased level of resistance training and improves, among other things, stride length and frequency. Now transpose this technology onto a stand up paddle workout and the benefits carry over. The added resistance, especially in light to moderate wind conditions, provides the athlete with enhanced upwind conditions.

All stand up paddle racers can attest that, during a race, the turn around the buoy that turns downwind into upwind is what separates those who have trained hard and those who have not. Adding resistance training to a SUP workout will prepare the racer for these types of conditions when it really counts; on the race course.

After spending the first part of her life in Minnesota, Morgan traded in her snow boots for sandals and moved to sunny California. After graduating with a degree in Communication from The University of Southern California, she eventually made her way down south to San Diego and is taking advantage of the living by the best beaches and burritos California has to offer. If it’s sunny, you can find her at the beach relaxing, or exploring the calm water in the bay via paddleboards and kayaks.
