SANTA CRUZ, CA – Santa Cruz is on its way to have the first fully dedicated stand up paddle shop in Northern California. As the explosive growth of the sport continues to sprawl its tentacles around the globe, this comes as no surprise. Scott and Leslie Ruble, two sup enthusiasts in Santa Cruz, are poised to announce that they will be opening an exclusive stand up paddle shop on April 2nd.

In the early 2000’s, while stand up paddling was still in its nascent stages in California, Santa Cruz became one of the three epicenters for the growth of the sport on the Gold Coast, San Diego and Malibu being the other two. Bob Pearson, a longtime shaper from the Santa Cruz area, saw Laid Hamilton practicing the gondola-style surfing at Malibu’s classic point and quickly became enchanted with the sport, later shaping himself some stand up paddle boards when getting back to his hometown, so goes the story.

Forward a few years: stand up paddling has become a pandemic and Santa Cruz will be able to claim its first exclusive sup shop in a few months. With the region’s scenic coastline, the city is bound to become a major destination for the sport, not only for its touring attributes but also for its world-renown waves. In the coming weeks, Scott and Leslie Ruble will be opening up the doors to their new sup shop, making for a fortuitous opportunity to visit the surf city to the north.
