HOOD RIVER, Oregon -- For many of us, cancer has affected our lives in a personal way. Through the struggles of a family member, a friend, or even a co-worker, we have seen just how difficult a battle with cancer can be.

Tonia Farman, professional kiteboarding instructor and advocate for the sport, watched her brother Scott battle Leukemia for a year before he passed away in June 2007. For 13 months, Tonia supported Scott as he braved chemotherapy, radiation treatment and clinical study tests.

Refusing to stand idle in the face of her brother’s struggle, Tonia decided to leverage her drive as a professional athlete and set up the Kiteboarding 4 Cancer event in 2007. After an amazing initial event and strong support, SUP 4 Cancer was added in 2009, Kayaking 4 Cancer in 2010 and Skateboarding 4 Cancer in this year’s event.

All events form the Tenacity Games, a multi-day, multi-sport adventure event to raise money for various cancer advocacy, prevention, and survivorship programs in the battle to find a cure.

The Tenacity Games are put on by Athletes for Cancer, the event’s primary beneficiary. Athletes for Cancer hosts outdoor adventure camps as a channel to foster self-confidence and strengthen survivorship as survivors face life after cancer.

This year’s SUP 4 Cancer event will be held on July 8th and 9th. The first day of the event will consist of a Distance Race, Kids SUP Race and a SUP Full Contact Race. On the second day there will be an Individual Course Race, a Teen SUP Race and a SUP Team Relay Race.

Go to the SUP 4 Cancer website for more details on how to register, participate and support this great event.

Morgan Becker

After spending the first part of her life in Minnesota, Morgan traded in her snow boots for sandals and moved to sunny California. After graduating with a degree in Communication from The University of Southern California, she eventually made her way down south to San Diego and is taking advantage of the living by the best beaches and burritos California has to offer. If it’s sunny, you can find her at the beach relaxing, or exploring the calm water in the bay via paddleboards and kayaks.
