SAN DIEGO, California -- Mo Freitas and Zane Schweitzer have pulled away from the rest of the pack and are now in a sprint to the finish. The battle, which originally pitted Hawaii vs. Australia, has now become a contest between the historic watermen culture of Hawaii and the beach culture of Brazil.

Zane Schweitzer, a champion in many different divisions including The Battle of The Paddle Open age 14’ class and the Distance 12’6” class and the 11-City Tour 150 miles across Holland in the Junior division, is representing Hawaii from his home in Lahaina. He continues to compete at an elite level and is an excellent example of the new SUP generation that will take the sport to a whole new level.

Mo Freitas, who recently took down second place in the Battle of the Paddle Hawaii in the Boys 13-14 division and has logged some strong finishes in other events this year, has been propelled by an impressive surge in votes. Mo finds dual support from his home in Haleiwa Hawaii, and from his father's home of Brazil.

While the other contenders have fallen behind, it isn’t too late for them to make a last minute run. Some of the California kids have made moves recently and Australia has had some strong support over the month.

Voting for the SUP Grom Awards closes at the end of the month (this week!) so get your votes in now. Show your support, rally your respective troops and get behind one of these SUP groms to push them into first place.

Have you stand up paddled in Hawaii or Brazil before?

Morgan Becker

After spending the first part of her life in Minnesota, Morgan traded in her snow boots for sandals and moved to sunny California. After graduating with a degree in Communication from The University of Southern California, she eventually made her way down south to San Diego and is taking advantage of the living by the best beaches and burritos California has to offer. If it’s sunny, you can find her at the beach relaxing, or exploring the calm water in the bay via paddleboards and kayaks.
