KELOWNA, Canada - A long-running fundraiser that switched from a golf marathon to stand-up paddle boarding made a successful splash Sunday, August 9th at Rotary Beach in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. The Pihl Law Paddle for Prevention fundraiser in support of Okanagan based charity BrainTrust Canada raised $47,000 in support of brain injury education and prevention. Almost 200 paddle boarders turned out for the first-time event, and participated as individuals or teams in categories of corporate, friend or family. The race itself, was a 100 meter sprint around a buoy and back, and for many participants it was the first time they had stepped foot on a paddleboard.

The event was very family oriented and inclusive, with a “Toonie Zone” that included kids games. SUP expert Bob Purdy, well known for paddle boarding every day since 2011 to promote his cause “Paddle for the Planet” donated his time to introduce BrainTrust to the world of stand up paddle boarding and act as Race Marshall at the event. Participants had the chance to win great prizes including a SUP ATX Paddle board courtesy of Okanagan Beach Rentals and SUPATX, and a trip for 2 to anywhere WestJet flies. “We were so pleased with the community support we received from sponsors, volunteers,” says Magda Kapp, Director of Communications for BrainTrust Canada. “It also speaks to the growing popularity of the sport, and to our knowledge it’s the first ever stand up paddle board fundraiser in Kelowna – we are pleased to announce it will be an annual event!”

BrainTrust Canada is an Okanagan-based organization providing direct services for individuals living with the outcomes of acquired brain injury, family support programs and education. Brain injury is the leading cause of death and disability under 44 in Canada and it is estimated that the lifetime costs of care associated with just one serious brain injury is over $5 million. However, up to 90% of injuries are preventable, therefore awareness is critically important.
