Paddle Board Highlights

Who is it for?

If you’re on the market for a premium race paddle board look no further. The RS by SIC Maui is short for ‘Rocket Ship’ and the name suits the board perfectly. This race board is fast and lightweight and is offered in multiple length and width combos, for both adult and youth paddlers. The RS is best for intermediate and advanced racers looking for a board that excels on flatwater but can also handle some chop. Starting at $2,599, the RS sits in the high price point tier but is a premium choice that is worth every penny.

First Impressions

For the 2020 edition of the RS, here's what it comes down to: If you want the board that will get everyone else jealous and will get you giggly to hit the water and paddle, look no further. This is it. To put it in context, I pulled this board out of the car and it was the only board where the people around walked up to us and said 'that thing is a thing of beauty.' It's an art piece and is truly stunning. The graphics are gorgeous and elegant, true to SIC Maui fashion and the shape and performance match the looks of the board. The second you get this board in the water it's just a rocket ship. For as narrow as it is it's shockingly stable and it just goes fast. For features, the board has drain holes on the deck and a foot well so it can handle some chop and be fairly sheltered from the bump. It goes downwind also very well and is just a joy. One of the main indicators of how much time you spend in the water is how much your equipment is and the equipment here is just phenomenal. It is the example and standard of what a phenomenal standup paddle race board is and should be.

Benefits

  • Primary Use

    Race

Paddle Boards fall into two broad categories, All-Around and Specialty boards, with all-around designed primarily for recreation while speciality boards for top performance in specific disciplines

  • Durability

    Durable

Durability is largely a result of the board construction and shape, with more durable boards typically carrying more materials (added layers, PVC, etc) and as such adding to the weight.

  • Carrying

    Easy

Carrying ease is determined by board weight and handle type, where a board weighing under 20lbs with a Liftsup handle is extremely easy to carry while a 35+lbs board quite difficult.

  • Stability

    Unstable

Stability is a product of construction and shape, where boards w/ 30”+ wide and 200+ liters in volume offer plenty of stability for your AVG adult while a board under 26” wide is a challenge.

  • Glide

    Very Fast

Glide is a result of board shape and construction, w/ boards weighing under 30lbs and designed for racing offering best glide while recreational boards normally being on the slow side.

Features

  • Dimensions

    14' x 23"

Industry standard in board dimensions reads: L (length, from nose to tail) x W (width, from rail to rail at midpoint length), and H (height, from top to bottom of board at midpoint length).

  • Weight

    27.4 lbs

Standup paddle boards tend to fall into 4 different weight classes: extremely lightweight (under 20 lbs), lightweight (20-28 lbs), average weight (28-35 lbs), heavy (above 35 lbs).

  • Volume

    271 L

Volume is a key metric to determine how much weight a board can carry. Boards w/ 200+ liters offer most floatation with boards under 150 liters typically for high-performance surf.

  • Capacity

    unknown

Capacity is the max cargo weight a stand up paddle board can carry, considering not only the paddler’s weight but whatever else the paddler may choose to carry alongside him/her.

  • Add On's

Bungee Nose, Extra handles on front of deck, drain holes on deck

Add-on’s include bungee cords, a minimalist way to haul things; Connexsup, which allows for all sorts of attachments, even fishing rods; and FCS II/Connect, for easy fin install.

  • Handle

    EZ Grab

Handles directly affect carrying ease, with external grip handles (Liftsup & EZgrab) offering most comfort, Internal Ergo Grip the mid-tier comfort, and box handles as least comfortable.

  • Holders

    No

Fishing rod holders and/or paddle holders can make paddling that much more pleasant, esp. when needing holders for the rod or having a safe place for the paddle during yoga.

Previous Versions: 2019

The SIC Maui RS, short for Rocket Ship, is a racing board meant for flatwater paddling and is incredible all around. The board feels quite stable for the narrow width of 26in which is probably due to the channels on the bottom. The construction is very strong and there are a lot of add-on’s and attachments on the deck that open up the board as a more versatile option. There are also some water run off channels on the deck that flush out the water so that you’re not retaining any of that water while you’re paddling. The board has a really shallow well where you stand that gets you close to the water which gives you the ability to get a more powerful stroke and leverage with each stroke. In terms of glide, the RS is as good as it gets. The board also seems to handle chop on flatwater really well and should be able to hold through some bump and swell. The bigger block on the tail gives you a really stable platform which helps during buoy turns or if you need to do a lot of movement on the board in general. The SIC Maui RS definitely lived up to the expectations and all the hype around it and is simply one of the best flatwater race boards on the market.
