NEWPORT BEACH, California - Hundreds of loyal Standup for the Cure Participants joined together this past weekend to celebrate life and pay tribute to our community’s Breast Cancer Survivors, Warriors and those loved ones that have been lost to this horrible disease. Standup for the Cure, holding true to their mission, continues to build an empathetic, supportive community and promote an active, healthy lifestyle, all while raising money to provide breast cancer screening and treatment to the underserved.

The day began with a moving opening ceremony and blessing that brought tears to many eyes. The spirit of Aloha flowed like a wave over everyone present. The Sea of Pink, which represents the strength of our community coming together in the battle against Breast Cancer and recognition of those affected directly or indirectly by this disease, was the prelude for our 5k paddle. This year we had the outrigger community, dragon boat community, Standup paddleboards, prone paddleboards and kayaks on the water for some racing lead by the safety crew from Newport Aquatic Center.

Our festival continued with the “Survivor Relay” which consisted of teams representing our top fundraisers pitted together in fierce competition around a triangle course I the lagoon. A team of volunteers represented a very special Warrior who just finished her treatment on Friday, Team Gill Strong winning the relay followed by Namaste Bitches and Salty Beaches. It’s safe to say there was a lot of fun and celebration on the beach.

The Jake Hitt Band set the atmosphere for the afternoon with some amazing music. I can’t imagine a better background for an incredible lunch hosted by Newport Rib Company and Happy Hour served by Kona Brewing Company and Califino Tequila. What a treat. At the endo of the day, our long-time partner AO Coolers won our Fundraising competition followed in a close second by Namaste Bitches who also had the Top Individual Fundraiser, Carolyn Briggs.

This amazing celebration couldn’t happen without the support of our major partners and vendors. Our Presenting Partner, Kaiser Permanente really stepped it up this year with our clinical breast cancer screening, melanoma screening and representation from their eyecare division, colorectal cancer department and health and well being department. Of course, the Newport Dunes Resort was once again the perfect venue for Standup for the Cure. Their hospitality and professional staff made everyone feel at home. We had some new partners this year and our long-time supporters including Atoll Board Company, Koloa Surf Company, AO Coolers and Califino Tequila. Our partners and vendors make it possible for 100% of our grassroots donations to be directed to Susan G Komen Orange County Region to fund screening and treatment programs for the underserved with 25% funding research.

Thank you to all our participants and donors for making this a wonderful day. We at Standup for the Cure are honored to have you as part of the family!

Great news for those that are unable to attend the physical event, Standup for the Cure is continuing its’ National Micro-Event Campaign that allows participants anywhere in the country to host their own Mini-Standup for the Cure. “Surprisingly, a positive benefit from the pandemic is that we’ve grown our SUFTC community to include a presence in 32 states.” According to Executive Director Dan Van Dyck. “Our team has decided to continue to offer this National Micro-Event Campaign to harness that momentum to continue to expand our mission.” Registration for this Campaign is active now.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information, visit the Standup for the Cure website and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
