Registration Open for Sea Paddle NYC 2019

2017's Sea Paddle NYC. 2017's Sea Paddle NYC.

NEW YORK, New York – Registration for SEA Paddle NYC 2019 is now open. The event, to be held Saturday, August 3, is a 25-mile competitive and charity paddle around Manhattan which is considered one of the premier SUP and prone paddle events in the world.

Celebrating its 13th year, the event is hosted by the Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA) and has raised more than $3.45 million. Paddlers are each required to raise a minimum of $1,000, and teams are required to raise $500 for each team member, with all proceeds benefiting SEA, which works on environmental issues inherent to the surfing community and provides support to children with autism and their families. The event draws hundreds of elite athletes from around the world to traverse the dangerous waters circling the island of Manhattan in a grueling 25-mile race. Relay teams are also encouraged to enter.

Past participants include legends and pros like Gerry Lopez, Tom Curren, Joel Tudor, Jamie Mitchell, Kealii Mamala, Will Skudin, Mo Freitas, Candice Appleby, Seychelle Webster, Annabel Anderson and young phenom Kai Lenny.

“It’s unlike any other SUP event because paddling around Manhattan is an extraordinary experience,” says SEA Executive Director Richard Lee. “The conditions SEA Paddle NYC presents are extremely challenging, which makes it incredibly exciting.”

Paddlers enter the start of the race at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge and then head uptown, traversing Hell’s Gate, the Harlem River, the East River, all the way back down the Hudson. Each leg of the race provides a unique set of circumstances due to an aqua-terrain that offers tremendous mental and physical challenges. Paddlers can register to participate or join the after party here. Prize money is for elite paddlers only. Cost of registration for elite paddlers is $365, and $250 for charity paddlers.
