Mencinsky Groms Shred In Southern Baja

BAJA CALIFORNIA, Mexico - Southern Californian brothers Gavin (14) and Trevor (10) Mencinsky recently took a family trip across the border to Southern Baja to enjoy some sweet swell at Cerritos Beach. As participation in SUP continues to rise, it is awesome to see youth paddlers contributing to this growth and developing a passion for the sport.

Boardworks' Andrew Mencinsky, father of the two groms, says that his sons really got into stand up paddling about five years ago, but that their interest in water sports started much earlier. When they first started with SUP they would use their dad’s small surf boards. A waterman and SUP enthusiast himself, Andrew wanted to give his kids a chance to experience all the awesomeness that the sport has to offer from the start.

“I put a paddle in their hand basically when they could stand,” says Mencinsky.

The boys grew up right near a river and beach on the East Coast, so they would spend time on the water often. Then, after moving to Southern California, the brothers were introduced to The Paddle Academy where they have been able to train and improve their skills on the water. Check out this awesome edit of the two shredding at Cerritos Beach during their recent trip to Baja. Gavin is riding a 5’10 and Trevor a 5’6 and they are both using youth-specific Black Project paddles.

Marissa Scheid

Born and raised in the Golden State, Marissa Scheid is a true California girl through and through. She grew up in Livermore, a Northern California city in the suburbs of San Francisco's Easy Bay Area, where she developed a passion for writing and a love for competitive sports, especially soccer. After finishing high school, she moved down the coast to San Diego, California to study World Literature at UCSD and play for the university's collegiate soccer team. Transplanted from a town in the wine country to one of California's most beautiful coastal cities, she quickly grew an affinity for the water and all aspects of the ocean lifestyle.
