SAN DIEGO, California – All finalist sup couples have been posted and you only have a few hours left to go to Supconnect’s Facebook page and let us know with your likes and comments who you think should win. Like for Mr. and Ms. Sup, the search for Sup Couple of the Year will come down to a combination of audience feedback and the couple’s track record. Three of the top criteria when choosing them will be community involvement, ambassadorship, and (lastly and with much less weight) athletic performance. Posts on the wall of the Sup Couple group will also be considered as audience feedback and will be heavily weighed into our decision-making.

Here is how we flesh out the three criteria mentioned above. Community involvement is highly prized for we want the Sup Couple of the Year to be faces that accurately represent the ethos of the sport. And of all things, the personal, grassroots involvement of the athletes with its community is one of the most noticeable trademarks of stand up paddling. And this community involvement is coupled (pardon the pun!) with exceptional ambassadorship, of a highly cheerful, positive and welcoming people. If anyone has stand up paddled, then these two traits (community involvement and ambassadorship) are two of the first things that one is likely to come across. So the Sup Couple of the Year needs to score highest on these two fronts. Then there is performance, and this is lastly and least important. But nevertheless, as we’ve said with our nomination of Mr. and Ms. Sup, we only want to make sure that the Sup Couple is comprised of two competent paddlers.

The pool of nominees for this year’s search for Sup Couple of the Year 2010 is highly popular and they all have a real chance of claiming the title. Let’s take a quick look. Steve and Barrie Boehne have been on the very cusp of stand up paddling, from its very beginning. In fact, Mr. Boehne was one of the first shapers in mainland US to have his tandem boards being used as stand up paddle (sup) boards, in a time when sup boards were nowhere to be found. Andie and EJ Johnson are also serious contenders. Present at nearly every race and some sup surf events, it’s hard for you to find a more cheerful and welcoming couple, plus each of them are committed racers on their own right. And so the list goes with some other incredible names like Dan Gavere and Nikki Gregg, Jim and Elizabeth Terrell, Dave and Rhonda Daum, and many others.
