KINGSCLIFF, Australia – The Australian Longboard Surfing Open, formerly known as "Malfunction," was held over the weekend down in Kingscliff, Australia, with an impressive lineup of athletes competing across multiple divisions. Although the event is by and large a gathering for longboarders, there was enough action for stand up paddle boarders, with a professional and two amateur divisions – no, there were no races.

Open Professional SUP Surf Results

1    18.70    Beau Nixon
2    13.53    Jackson Close
3    13.24    Geoff Breen
4     9.84    Dane Wilson

Also worth noting was Candice Appleby's performance in the event. As noted earlier, there were no races and also no female pro sup surf heats. That means that Appleby had, as she is quite used to doing, go up against the men in the pro sup surf division. Her first heat was stacked with two athletes who would eventually make it to the final, Jackson Close and Geoff Breen. She didn't have much luck there. But that didn't keep her from excelling in the longboard contest. Going up against longboard champions and world champions, Appleby managed to make it all the way to the final of not only the women's professional division, but also the Retro and Old Mal's division, both of which had male athletes.
