FENWICK ISLAND, Delaware - Paddle Fenwick is more than just another stand up paddleboard event. ·It is a very heartfelt event that is bringing people together to support those who have fought for our freedom. ·After all, it's pretty obvious by learning more about veterans that freedom is not free.

Saturday June 29th and Sunday June 30th will bring people together for a weekend festival of stand up paddle (SUP) board fun and racing.  However the main purpose behind the event is to raise awareness and funds for Operation Second Chance (OSC), a non-profit organization committed to serving our wounded combat veterans who are recovering in the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and are transitioning back to civilian life.  The road after being wounded in combat is no easy path and many people can overlook the challenges that face these brave men and women.

Mike Fox, owner of Boardworks Surf and part of the "steering committee" for the event, is privileged to have a supporting roll in the the paddle Fenwick event.  In fact he shared the following about his own father. "Many of you know my father, Evarts was a 20 year Navy officer and pilot who served two tours in Vietnam, so although I never served in our armed forces I lived the life of a son who witnessed the dedication, commitment and sacrifice of our service members.  Today more than ever they need and deserve our help. OSC gives them that!!!"

Walt Ellenberger is another integral part of what's making Paddle Fenwick a success.  You see, he is a Co-Chair of Ride Allegheny (RA), a four day 320 mile bike journey from Pittsburgh to D.C. which also raises money for OSC each year during the fall.  But recently Ellenberger, his sister Beth Bradford (also on the Paddle Fenwick event "steering committee") and previously mentioned Mike Fox, thought it would be a good idea to create a summer fundraiser as well.  This is when Paddle Fenwick was born and when Ellenberger shifted into overdrive to make this first annual paddle event a success.

"My brother and his friends work tirelessly to raise money so that we can give back just a little bit to those who sacrifice," explains Beth. "All so that we can live safely in the United States of America.  We all know who the real heros are here…it is our duty to honor them…and that is our mission with these fundraisers."

The Saturday Paddle Fenwick Festival will take place at DelMarVa Board Sports & Harpoon Hanna’s 39084 Harpoon Road, Fenwick Island, DE 19944.  The Sunday racing will happen at Holts LandingState ParkRoad 346, Millville, DE 19967.

For those who can not personally attend the good news is that it is easy to donate to the cause or sponsor a participating paddler!  For more information just visit the Donations Page of the Paddle Fenwick Website.
