SUNSET BEACH, Hawaii - Day 1 of the 2014 Sunset Beach Pro got started yesterday in clean 5 -7 foot waves. After a slow morning with small surf, the swell slowly picked up enough for the men's trial round to get underway. 34 hopefuls came out swinging for 8 available spots in the main rounds. It was a good start to one of the most highly anticipated events on the calendar and with a bump in the swell expected later this week, it looks like the Sunset Beach Pro will finish in bigger, better waves.

Watch the Highlights Below

The eight advancing trialists are:

BERND ROEDIGGER (HI) 12.17

JAMES CASEY (USA) 10.47

MONNIER MANUTEA 10.33

TOBY CRACKNELL (USA) 9.93

FISHER GRANT (USA) 9.56

KAINOA TEXIERA (BRA) 9.3

KIERAN GRANT 8.26

ANTHONY VELA (USA) 6.87

Event organizers will convene at 7 A.M. today to assess conditions and make the call for today. When competition resumes, the likes of Kai Lenny, Sean Poynter and Kody Kerbox will be getting their 2014 campaigns off to a start. For more updates and ino, check out the Waterman League. Also running alongside the Sunset Beach Pro is the Turtle Bay Pro, the 2014 opener for the women's Stand Up World Tour.
